Boys of summer return to the playa as Warriors from another galaxy dazzle on opening night

After an opening evening postponement, the Beach Rugby Series kicked off for summer season last Thursday evening amidst a windy evening on Camps Bay.

The Series features the most teams it has seen with 7 new teams for the summer including corporate sides from local Cape Town business and international firms plus teams looking for glory following victory for the CB Legends in the spring.

The opening fixtures were not without entertainment or shocks as the champions were pushed to the brink against new ITEC 7STARS coming out with a narrow and hard fought 4.3 victory. The second string CB Legends side fells to finalists from spring 2.1 in an equally narrow game.

It was the electric form of the Amazing Galaxy Warriors though that had the sands blowing as they destroyed an experience Caprice Staff side 7.1 in their opening fixture with captain Slamang pulling the strings. They then stunned Camps Bay almost into silence as they ran out 6.3 winners against CB Legends. When thinking that CB conceded 2 scores in the entirety of Spring season, they have leaked 9 already in the summer, the sands of time catching up?

Caprice Cobras showed consistency from last season with a win and a draw whilst Flying Fish who did not win a game before finals day in the Spring, opened with 2 victories and some great play.

KPMG and FWJK both opened their accounts with a win and a loss and will be a threat for cup qualification as the season progresses. The WheyO Warriors and SOB Barbarians will need to find some form after a tough opening evening which also saw perennial underachievers the Inbetweeners go home with a win and a loss.
