It finally happened. After months of talking, UR7s SA finally launched the Beach Rugby Series on Camps Bay in Cape Town.
The autumn season is a pilot season for the project which will see UR7s SA expand it further to 6-8 week seasons on multiple beaches in the Spring and Summer across Cape Town.
On the opening evening of 'pre-season' four of the competing sides had a run out including former World Series Player of the Year nominee Mat Turner on the sand of Camps Bay with sponsors CIPLA Nutrition and Cafe Caprice in full force with the smoothie bar and the Red Bull Chill Out Zone.
The players enjoyed it as they played to the rules of needing a sweeper in place in five down touch. Following the action all the players headed over Cafe Caprice for a beer and a burger sponsored by JD and Caprice which will also be holding the end of season awards afternoon on April 24th.
Mat Turner said 'It was a great evening, it's hard work on the sand though!'
Unless you are player of the evening Rial though who won the title of 'World's fastest man on sand' in 2015 and it was obvious as he ran in scores for his side.
Turner went on to say 'It's great for this to be here. South Africans and Cape Townians love rugby and this is an iconic beacha and the summer has not quite dissapeared to it was a real jol!"
The second round of the series kicks off on April 21st at 5.30pm before finals day takes place on Sunday April 24th between 11am and 2pm
