This week of play saw the teams settle into the innovative rules and start to understand the concepts of non-contact 7s. Spatial awareness, movement of the ball, player movement off the ball and manipulation of space are all aspects of the game that players showed a good understanding of. Although there was plenty of movement on the field with players vying for the sought-after weekly awards of Dirty Feet and Silly Wheels, the main movement was off the field.
There was a big shuffle up with the log as teams put up their hands to make an early impact on the finals day seeding. The Amazing Galaxy Warriors stay cemented to the top with 2 victories, including a hard worked 15 – 0 win over the Bo-Kaap Hurricanes. This game had it all. A fast-paced and intensely fought battle between the 2, where a couple of well worked tries were the difference. The members of the Bo-Kaap Hurricanes confidently said that they didn’t want to show their hand and would meet them in the finals.
The Zamaleks, who joined the fray this week, had a baptism of fire as they took on The Other Guys in their first encounter. For a team that hasn’t played the non-contact 7s format they were brutally awoken to the intensity and demand on the cardiovascular system. With a full field to play and only 7 players to defend it, you have to be fit, strong and agile. There is no doubt that the Zama’s will reflect on this week’s performance and come back as strong as ever.
When it comes to consistency, the 2 teams which stand out the most are The Dynamiters and The Other Guys. Week in and week out their performances are consistent and they play a controlled and “relaxed” type of game with a focus on the basics and energy conservation. Both teams had a solid week of play and ended up going unbeaten on the day. They climbed the log and put their hands up as serious competitors for the overall title. The Saints more tuned to the contact form of the game got their first win of the season and will be looking to build of their previous performances.
There is no doubt that teams will only get better and the series will only get more exciting.
See you at Gardens Rugby Club next Monday evening for more exciting non-contact 7s.
A special shout out goes to Liam Kloosman from the Zaak Nation, who had 2 incredible games. He is the first player to win both the Dirty Feet and Player of the Week Award.
