UR7s launched UR7aside in Cape Town and the UK in the January with the opening league in the Western Cape kicking off on March 6th in the shadow of Table Mountain.
It gives players from touch, rugby, rugby 7s a chance to play non-contact rugby 7s. You have to be fit and workout your tactics but it gives everybody a chance to play which is amazing

UR7s hosted a press conference today for the launch of the league in Cape Town and spoke about the upcoming season, the rules, the teams and expansion in Spring 2017.

The pilot league this autumn taking place in Cape Town features 12 teams with all of the spots in the league having sold out in the space of 14 days. UR7s group chairman spoke of the interest.
"We are so pleased with the uptake on the opening league for UR7aside and very proud that the first season will be in Cape Town, home of the top team in the HSBC World Sevens Series. We had planned an 8 team league for the pilot season but had to expand it to 12 teams. I personally am really excited to see these teams show some real flair and leave it all on the field with this new concept. We have tested the rules vastly over the past few weeks with players from SACS and elsewhere with a exhibition game still to come. It's going to be really exciting"
The opening league is made up of internal league teams, touch teams, social rugby teams and groups of friends which has pleased former England 7s star Mat Turner.
"When you look at the teams that have entered, it really underlines why we are doing it. It gives players from touch, rugby, rugby 7s a chance to play non-contact rugby 7s. You have to be fit and workout your tactics but it gives everybody a chance to play which is amazing"
"The league season runs for 5 weeks with a finals day at the end which will include all 12 teams"
Burwell spoke of already looking ahead to Spring
"We are launching six leagues across the UK in June and I am already excited for Spring in South Africa following the completion of the rugby season. We will have multiple leagues in Cape Town with the addition of leagues in Stellenbosch, Durban and Johannesburg and I continue to talk to prospective partners about other leagues. We have not gone looking for these partners, they have come to us, which is really exciting. The possibility of a national UR7aside Champs is something we could look at down the line"
The draw and schedule for the opening week of play on March 6th will be announced next week.
