Following months of hard work, the Nashua School 7s Invitational launched at Hamiltons RFC in Cape Town last night with representatives of the sponsors, teams and members of the local press in attendance.
Managed by UR7s SA, the evening was designed for title sponsor Nashua, officiating partner Nolands and UR7s themselves to supply further detail on the tournament and why they are involved on September 2nd.
UR7s Global CEO, Tom Burwell introduced the tournament saying how excited he was for September 2nd whilst underlining the importance of the development of players and referees in the game of 7s and how the invitational will become an important tool for such delivery
"We very much want this tournament to be one of expression. Players and Officials having the chance to enjoy their rugby, express their talents on a level playing field in a world class environment"
He went on to talk about the plans for the tournament in the future and how UR7s is already working on expansion of the competition across the country
"We are starting here in Cape Town but this is not just for the Western Cape. In 2018 we will expand to having tournaments in Johannesburg & Durban as well with growth in team numbers in each tournament. The festivals at this point will include live-streaming as well for them to be watched globally"
The 2017 edition of the competition will include teams from the following schools and programs
- Paul Roos
- VUSA Academy
- Connect Academy
- Western Cape Sports School
Burwell went on to say "We very much hope that further schools will support the tournament in 2017 but we will always stay true to development roots including the Academies and small schools as we believe 7s at U14-U16 age-groups is very much a level playing field"
Afrika Tau, Head of Sales for Title Partner Nashua spoke of their dedication to development across the country through the shadow ball program.
"Nashua has shown it's commitment to grass-roots sports and wanting to develop the future on and off the field. Our shadow ball program is delivered across the entire country and now the franchises of Paarl, Cape Town, Tygerberg have come together to once again show their commitment to growth of rugby in South Africa"
Errol Denman, Marketing Director of Nolands who are sponsoring the officials spoke along the same lines "Nolands has long sponsored a hockey tournament and we have seen huge growth, we are also involved in soccer and now it's time for something different with rugby. We always like to approach things differently and for the long-term. We are excited to be involved on September 2nd"
